In 1982, President Reagan announced plans to restore both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. “CBS Morning News” correspondent Jerry Landay returned to Ellis Island with Irene Engelman, who spent 11 anguished days awaiting clearance after she fled war-torn Europe back in 1940. Landay also spoke with Lee Iacocca, who had been newly appointed as chairman of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial Commission. This was originally broadcast on Nov. 17, 1982.
